guiletta's own mother had died during childbirth and her father, count luchino nefaria had sent her to the frost family in order to give her a decent life. mostly because he preferred a male heir instead and within their care she was given the identity of whitney frost. after revealing her true parentage, whitney went to work with her father. she became the leader of maggia. she had attempted to infiltrate stark industries using her charms to seduce s.h.i.e.l.d agent jasper sitwell. her plans went downhill when she developed romantic feelings for sitwell. her plans further fell apart as she was involved in an accident and her face was permanently disfigured. she became affiliated with mordecai midas and acquired a golden mask to cover up her scarred face. this resulted in her new codename: madame masque.
midas then captured anthony stark, believing him to be a fake and an incredible look-alike, ordered madame masque to train stark and infiltrate stark industries. in order to replace its current leader, to return control of the company back to midas. the plot however, failed. she had started to develop strong feelings for stark who insisted that the mask she wore was not an obstacle for him to overcome. however, madame masque still held strong feelings for jasper sitwell. when she told stark of her feelings for sitwell, stark moved on with his life. at this time sitwell was also severely injured by the spy-master, hovering near death and went through a gruelling rehabilitation. sitwell and madame masque drifted apart.
it was while she was under the identity of "krissy longfellow" that she infiltrated stark industries again and learned that he father was gravely ill. she then left her life with midas to the pursue a life of crime once more. she helped capture stark again, with the help of ani-men in an attempt to coerce stark into curing her father's ionic induced life-threatening aging. stark easily escaped and refused to release her father incarceration. in response to this refusal she battled with him using his own weapons from one of his european labs. with the final straw she left, after believing that her father had perished during the battle, she returned to her criminal mastermind ways.
after another horrible attempt to kill stark. madame masque created clones of herself, each one going by the name of whitney frost. she had become intensely paranoid. in this state, she repeatedly order her clones to be killed and replaced by more duplicates. several of the bodies were found and identified by stark. madame masque appeared to assist the avengers and thunderbolts against count nefaria's plot to bombard the world with a massive ionic bomb. stark believes it was the real guiletta nefaria and not one of her clones. when this was stopped she helped hood end the superhuman registration act and became his second in command. helped him fight against the new avengers but to only be taken down by doctor strange.
during skull's invasion to earth, madame masque was captured but soon rescued by hood. hood captured and tortured the skull agents within shield only to find out skull's true intentions. soon hood and madame masque were seen fighting side-by-side with the new avengers to end skull's terror. then norman osborn placed a bounty on stark's head and called madame masque in to help him recover stark himself. only for her plans were to be countered by pepper potts. potts returned to norman osborn, desiguised as masque herself, and told him that potts was dead. but madame masque was soon rescued by hood and learned that she had fallen for the man. it wasn't until hood battled dr. strange to be sorcerer supreme that she watched the man she love struggle with being possessed. after the end of the battle hood left only to return with the reality gem to heal her scarred face.
madame masque is a key member of hydra and still has control over maggia. she also has a vendetta against hawkeye for stealing her identity and killing a chinese diplomat as her.
